Tough Weekend in Sassnitz Continues with P11 Overall for the U.S. SailGP Team

Catch up on all the action from Sunday’s racing at the Germany Sail Grand Prix

After enduring a difficult Saturday that saw the Crew pick up just four event points, the U.S. SailGP Team was back out on the water for the second day’s racing at the Germany Sail Grand Prix, off the coast of the Baltic Sea resort town of Sassnitz.
Running in Group B this weekend along with Artemis Sweden, the Bonds Flying Roos, Deutsche Bank Germany, Northstar Canada and Emirates GBR, as part of the Rolex SailGP Championship’s new split-fleet formula, the Crew was out in the first race of the day. The race was marked out by heavy rain and highly unpredictable wind conditions.
Championship leaders the Bonds Flying Roos took an early lead but were caught out by the changeable wind, dropping off the foils along with almost every other team. The German squad was the only one able to take advantage of the conditions to build up a commanding lead and take a popular home win, their second of the weekend. They were followed up by CAN, SWE, GBR, AUS and finally, the U.S. SailGP Team, landing another frustrating result in P6.
Group A headed out next in a race largely controlled by the Black Foils of New Zealand, who took a decisive win ahead of Los Gallos and DS Automobiles France. After the Kiwi squad’s strong Saturday, this result was enough to guarantee them the first of four spots in the event final.
Group B lined up again for their fifth and final group race of the weekend, with the U.S. SailGP Team welcoming a new member on board in 24-year-old Harry Melges IV, who signed with the team in November 2025. The Crew pulled off an incredible start, building up an early lead but eventually dropping to a finishing position of P3 – its best result of the weekend, but not enough to challenge for a spot in the final. Northstar Canada and the Bonds Flying Roos finished in P1 and P2 respectively, both advancing to the final.
Group A’s final fleet race was dominated by Los Gallos of Spain, who soared into an early lead and never looked back, while rivals for a spot in the final, DS Automobiles France, could only manage P5.

The Bonds Flying Roos, Northstar Canada, Los Gallos and the Black Foils lined up for a final under rainy skies and highly changeable conditions, but it was the Aussie squad who took what turned out to be a decisive win as the remaining three boats all dropped off their foils when rounding the last mark and drifted towards the line. In the end, it was P2 to Canada, P3 to Spain and, after a penalty for impeding at the boundary, P4 to New Zealand.
The Bonds Flying Roos’ event victory sees them extend their already comfortable lead at the top of the championship standings. They now sit on 76 points, 14 ahead of second-placed Los Gallos. Meanwhile, a difficult weekend for the U.S. SailGP Team saw the Crew finish P11 in the event standings and fail to pick up any championship points, dropping them down from P4 to P5 in the overall rankings behind Emirates GBR, with whom they sit level on 46 points each.
The Rolex SailGP Championship returns on September 4 and 5 for the Spain Sail Grand Prix, and the series’ first visit to the city of Valencia.
