Jeremy: We Know Who Are – We Just Need To Show It With Confidence

Wing Trimmer Jeremy Wilmot discusses the season so far as the U.S. SailGP Team prepares for June’s Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix

Season Five has been one of mixed emotions for the U.S. SailGP Team – but Wing Trimmer Jeremy Wilmot insists the crew are on the right path ahead of their return to action at June’s Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix.
The cancelation of the inaugural ENEL Rio Sail Grand Prix means it will have been 76 days since the team last raced together in San Francisco by the time they take to the water in New York. The team has been taking full advantage of that unexpected pause in the season and Jeremy is optimistic about what is to come over the rest of the campaign.
Reflecting on the first five events of the SailGP season, he said: “I would have preferred not to have such extreme ups and downs by this point in the season. The podium finish in Dubai was definitely a massive high for us. We felt like we were on the right track – it was the result of a lot of hard work.

“But then we hit a rough patch, and that was a big shift. We probably thought we were more prepared than we were and ended up on the back foot, especially heading into New Zealand.
“Since then, we've been trying to get back to where we know we can be. Sydney was a real low point. I’ve never experienced something like that before – being part of a severely damaged boat.
“You hear about offshore sailors or pros snapping rigs on TP52s or Mini Maxis, and it's just part of the job. But that was my first time going through something like that, and it was definitely tough.
“Bouncing back from Sydney was about rediscovering the fight and hunger we had heading into Dubai. Everyone was eager to prove themselves back then. With New Zealand and then Sydney, we lost momentum, but I think we're now on the path to regaining it.
“We know who we are, what we can do – we just need to go out there and show it with confidence.”

What has impressed Jeremy most, though, has been the team’s resilience in the face of adversity.
“We’ve faced serious setbacks, and a lot of teams might’ve crumbled,” the Newport, RI, native said. “But we’ve stayed strong mentally. We’re determined to keep improving and chasing our goals. We get knocked down, but we never stop working.
“Mike (Buckley) always says, ‘It’s hard to beat someone who never gives up,’ and we live by that.
“Going forward, our path to success is simple: outwork everyone. We’re up against the best sailors in the world, so we have to find every advantage – video analysis, sailing other boats, team development off the water. And honestly, this team is hungrier than any other. I see it every day.”
