Group racing returns for Great Britain Sail Grand Prix

Confirmation that teams will again be divided into a split-fleet format in Portsmouth
Published 07/22/2026
SailGP has confirmed teams will again be split into two fleets for the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix – with the intention of using the format for the rest of the 2026 Season.
Split-fleet racing has successfully been implemented in Auckland and Halifax already this season. The format can be deployed based on a number of factors, including the size of the course, wind strength and stability, and sea state.
WHAT TIME IS THE GREAT BRITAIN SAIL GRAND PRIX?
The intention is to help deliver fair and competitive racing across a variety of venues and conditions.
Using group racing for the remainder of the 2026 Season gives teams and race organizers the chance to establish consistency and prepare for a familiar race format each weekend.
For Portsmouth, the fleet has been divided into two seeded groups based on results from the most recent event, with racing following an ‘ABBA’ schedule.
