PK's Diary: SailGP Impromptu Mid-Season Break

U.S. SailGP Team grinder Peter Kinney reveals what he's been up to during the break in the SailGP schedule...
Published 06/2/2025
It is crazy to think the 2025 season is nearly halfway through. Ten weeks have gone by since we were in San Francisco, and NYC cannot get here fast enough.
Safety first
The cancelation of Rio was unfortunate and disappointing, as we yearned to get back on the water ASAP. But it is encouraging to see the league making things happen to prevent any further catastrophe. The continuous evolution and improvement of SailGP is impressive, and we are fortunate to be apart of the leading edge of our sport.
Although we have not been able to get on the water together, we have been diligent with our weekly calls and continuing our ongoing collaboration in overcoming our disappointing results of late.
Friends re-united

The addition of Michael Menninger has infused a fresh outside perspective and solid technical knowledge from his recent America’s Cup campaign. We are really looking forward to having him with our team in New York City so he can continue to spread his knowledge and steady demeanor.
Personally, it is very cool to have Michael on the team. We grew up next door to each other, learned to sail and race against each other in Naples Sabots at Newport Harbor Yacht Club, and have remained close friends since. His natural skills, easy going personality and attitude will be a great addition to the team.

Welcome downtime
These past 10 weeks have allowed for some solid time in the gym and to enjoy home!
The break has brought me a little bit of everything with marine electronics work trips to Xiamen, China and Charleston, South Carolina, as well as opportunities to spend down time with friends at Coachella, Catalina Island, Australia & Croatia.
It has been a nice break from the whirlwind that is SailGP, but we are ready to get back to work in NYC this coming week.
