U.S. SailGP Team CEO, co-owner and Strategist Mike Buckley is already looking forward to the next event of the season, as we head to New York City at the start of June.
It will mean a third consecutive home race for the U.S. SailGP Team - after Los Angeles and San Francisco - and it is a venue that holds special significance for Empire State native Mike.
Speaking recently, he said: “There's not city in the world that has the energy of New York City and I think it's the ultimate privilege to be competing here in New York City alongside the the New York Yankees, the New York Mets, the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, New York Liberty, all these iconic sports franchises that call New York City home.

“So to have a platform next to them is just the ultimate privilege for our sport. The backdrop of racing an F50 against the Statue of Liberty, the Freedom Tower and the skyline is just iconic. Then, selfishly, this is home, so that's extra special for me.”
Racing in NYC will mean family and friends in the stands for Mike, who added: “That's another thing that's really cool about home events – you get friends and family there.
“Larry (Ellison) and Russell (Coutts’) vision was to bring racing closer to the fans and the fans closer to the racing. This is what allows for your family and friends to actually see what you do because previously they could only see it through photos and videos because the racing is always away from land.”
WIN PREMIUM HOSPITALITY FOR NEW YORK SAILGP
As ever, Mike has grand plans. He explained: “I have a vision of really extending our race weeks in market. As SailGP grows from what started as very much just a two-day event around a race, I'd like to turn it into a week-long culturally relevant experience. New York City is notorious for sporting events and entertainment in general is so tightly woven into the culture here.
“I want to replicate what we see at the US Open with all the Mercedes and Cadillac courtesy cars running around town and restaurant parties happening all over town, even though the US Open is played in Queens, which is an hour away!
“But to start it off in New York City is going to be extra special.”
