Data Dive: Sassnitz

In the first of a new series, we take a closer look at some of the data behind the Germany Sail Grand Prix
Published 08/21/2025
The inaugural Germany Sail Grand Prix was an incredible spectacle with more than 13,000 SailGP fans treated to a weekend of high-speed racing on the Baltic Sea.
It was the France SailGP Team and Quentin Delapierre who stole the show, though, shaking off practice setbacks to claim their first win of Season 5 in their third Final appearance.
Hometown favorites Germany SailGP Team presented by Deutsche Bank really stepped up, almost qualifying for their first-ever Final. They memorably won Race 1 and posted a P3 in the weekend’s penultimate race.
On Saturday, ROCKWOOL Denmark made history by recording a top speed of 103.93 km/h in Race 3 - the fastest speed ever recorded in SailGP history, smashing France’s previous record of 99.94 km/hr in Season 3.
But those are just the top-line facts and figures from an unforgettable weekend’s racing in Sassnitz. We want to take you closer to the action than ever before and, in the first of a new series, we’re going to take a deeper look at some of the data behind the Germany Sail Grand Prix.
SailGP collects more than 35,000 data points per second across the 12-strong fleet, creating a comprehensive stream of real-time information. Through the league's data democratization model, this information is accessible to all teams, allowing the rest of the fleet to analyze and learn from the performance across the leaderboard.
Day One
In high winds, speed was virtually guaranteed and three teams topped a ton on the day.
It was ROCKWOOL Denmark who hit the highest speed at 103.93 km/hr but the U.S. SailGP Team was not far behind, posting a speed of 101.44 km/hr. Making up the trio of centurions was Switzerland SailGP Team, nailing 100.53 km/hr.
In terms of average speed, the U.S. SailGP Team again impressed, tying with New Zealand and France at 61.4 km/hr.
The fewer maneuvers a team needs to perform, the better. It was the BONDS Flying Roos, finalists once more, who managed the fewest maneuvers - 32 in total. Tom Slingsby’s crew executed just 11 jibes and 21 tacks on an impressive Saturday that saw them go 6-3-1-2.
Getting up and foiling is key to hitting and maintaining speed. The Brits enjoyed the highest percentage of time flying at 98%, just besting France with 97%. However, it was NorthStar Canada who enjoyed the highest ride height - in other words, distance off the water when foiling - at 1098mm (1.098 meters).

Day Two
Getting close to the high speeds recorded on Saturday was always going to be a big ask - though hosts Germany SailGP Team presented by Deutsche Bank hit 90.9 km/hr to record Sunday’s highest speed. The Black Foils were just behind, managing 89.22 km/hr.
It was finalists Emirates GBR, who went 1-1-3 on a truly Super Sunday who recorded the day’s highest average boat speed at 49.5 km/hr, however. The BONDS Flying Roos were close behind, posting 46.8 km/hr.
On Day Two, it was Switzerland and New Zealand that tied for the fewest maneuvers around the race track, each hitting 25 in total. Close behind was Red Bull Italy with just 26.
Emirates GBR joined France in the Final, with both teams hitting an overall flight time of 88% - just ahead of Spain and BONDS Flying Roos on 86%. But the highest ride belonged to eventual winner France at 962mm (0.96 meters), a full 22mm ahead of the next highest average – Germany.
