Having already brought Saturday’s Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix forward by two-and-a-half hours, rain dominated proceedings in front of a packed grandstand on Governors Island.
Diego Botín’s Spain built on their win in San Francisco last time out with a solid showing in front of the Statue of Liberty, going 1-4-7 to finish day one top of the leaderboard, having racked up 25 points.
The conditions at the Mubdadala New York Sail Grand Prix were far from ideal
Inclement weather conditions meant fleet race one saw teams drop to three athletes to lighten the F50s, with the U.S. SailGP Team utilizing Taylor Canfield, Jeremy Wilmot and Anna Weis. For races two and three, that number increased to four.
Penalties marred fleet race one, with the BONDS Flying Roos handed two boundary penalties in the first three legs. But the race belonged to Spain and Botiín who crossed the line in first, thanks to a huge 14-second lead over New Zealand in second. The U.S. SailGP Team pipped Emirates Great Britain to finish 10th.
Canfield and the U.S. SailGP Team started fleet race two strongly, crossing the start line within a hair’s breadth of the BONDS Flying Roos, while ROCKWOOL Denmark were in close company on the outside line.
Tom Slingsby and Australia went toe-to-toe with Mubadala Brazil throughout, eventually coming out on top to win the second fleet race as the U.S. SailGP Team collected another 10th-place finish.
It was New Zealand’s turn to dominate in fleet race three, making the most of a flying start to ultimately lap the entire fleet.

Unsurprisingly, the Black Foils breezed across the line to take first place with a 1.38 minute advantage over ROCKWOOL Denmark and an astounding 6.14 minute lead over Spain.
For the U.S. SailGP Team, a seventh-place finish - putting Canfield and co. ahead of Emirates GBR, the BONDS Flying Roos and NorthStar Canada, among others - gave the partisan home crowd something to cheer from Governors Island.
