REPORT: High Winds Mean Reduced Fleet In New York City

The U.S. SailGP Team were one of just four teams to hit the water on Day 1 in New York
Published 05/30/2026
High winds meant a reduced fleet contested racing on Day 1 of the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix, with Emirates GBR, Los Gallos and the U.S. SailGP Team doing battle.
The BONDS Flying Roos had been due to make it a quartet but suffered technical difficulties after nosediving in the warm-up and were ruled out of action.
Strong winds in New York Harbor made safely craning the F50s almost impossible and teams were therefore craned out in Championship order. Racing was delayed by an hour in order to ensure there was action for the crowds to enjoy.
With the U.S. SailGP Team not yet on the water, racing began with just two teams – Emirates GBR and Los Gallos.
Champions in 2025, Great Britain led at Mark 1 and extended their advantage over Spain from there on out. It was no surprise to see Dylan Fletcher’s crew cross the line in 1st.
Race 2 was swiftly aborted when the U.S. SailGP Team appeared on the race track moments after Spain and Great Britain had crossed the start line. That meant a restart with the Crew joining the action without a warm-up.
It was nip and tuck throughout but Los Gallos took the Emirates winning moment, followed home closely by Emirates GBR.
Race 3 concluded an abridged day of racing on the Hudson with all three teams in close quarters as the klaxon went. It was a drag race to Mark 1 with Emirates GBR leading at the bear away.
In the closest of three races all day, the U.S. SailGP Team topped 100 km/hr on Leg 6 but came home in P3 with Los Gallos clinching their second win of the day.
Later in the day, the Race Committee confirmed no points would be awarded in the interest of fairness ahead of Day 2.
Racing returns on Sunday at 3.30pm ET. Make sure to follow along via the U.S. SailGP Team App and social channels.
