Spain And Diego Botín Continue Success On US Waters

Diego Botín and Spain make it back-to-back wins at the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix

For the first time in Season Five of SailGP, we have a repeat event winner – that is because Spain triumphed on the Hudson River in New York City, beating France and New Zealand in Sunday's Grand Final.
Conditions in the Empire State were better than on Saturday. However, more wind out on the course - coupled with choppy waters - made for frenetic racing on Super Sunday.

For Taylor Canfield and the U.S. SailGP Team, it was a tough afternoon, going 12-8-7.
A four-point penalty for the race weekend after coming into contact with ROCKWOOL Denmark on Saturday was an unwelcome development, costing the team two points on the season.
However, the undoubted highlight of the weekend for the U.S. SailGP Team was a fast start in fleet race six. Overall, they went 12-7-8 on the day in front of a packed out and partisan grandstand on Governors Island.
Los Gallos, winners in San Francisco last time out, broke the habit of a season to clinch their second victory of Season Five. Prior to this weekend, we had seen five different teams top the podium – not anymore.
A rip-roaring 72km/h start handed Spain an unassailable advantage in the Grand Final and France and New Zealand – finishing second and third respectively – could not make up for ground lost through the starting gate.

Earlier in the day, Mubadala Brazil made history by recording their first ever fleet race win, taking pole in fleet race four. Eventual runners-up France took the fifth and BONDS Flying Roos went some way to atoning for a below-par Saturday showing with victory in fleet race six.
It's on to the United Kingdom and Portsmouth next for the weekend of July 19-20.
