5 Things You Need To Know About Cádiz

Get ready for the penultimate event of Season 5 as the fleet heads to southern Spain this weekend…
Published 09/30/2025
An intense month of the SailGP calendar concludes in Cádiz this weekend as the DP World Spain Sail Grand Prix bookends the European leg of the SailGP season.
This will be the third event in four weeks for the fleet, following stops in Saint-Tropez and Geneva, and provides the final staging post before the campaign closes in Abu Dhabi at the end of November.
Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the weekend…
Happy hunting ground for U.S. SailGP Team
U.S. SailGP Team wins in Cádiz in Season 4
Cádiz will bring back happy memories for several members of the U.S. SailGP Team this week, having made three consecutive Finals in Andalucía.
In Season 2, a crew including Andrew Campbell went all the way to the Final only to fall short against Australia after Emirates GBR capsized at the line, blocking our path.
It was a similar story a year later, in Season 3, as France beat out Campbell and the U.S. SailGP Team by just three seconds – the closest winning margin ever at the time.
But in Season 4, the U.S. SailGP Team struck gold. A Crew including Mac Agnese, Peter Kinney and Taylor Canfield - subbing in for injured flight controller Hans Henken - made the most of their third shot, breezing home in the Final.
Germany the coming force?
Germany SailGP Team wins in Geneva
It’s been a season of progress for one of the fleet’s newest teams: Germany SailGP Team, presented by Deutsche Bank.
Agonizingly close to making the Final on home waters in Sassnitz in August, Erik Heil’s crew took a seismic leap in Geneva, going 9-7-5-1-3 to qualify for their first Final – only to win it!
Brand new to SailGP in Season 4, can the Germans continue their impressive back half of the season and build on the 23 Championship points they’ve accrued?
Time for Spain to step up
The Spain SailGP Team celebrates winning the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix in June
Season 4 Champions Spain need another big result if they’re to earn the right to defend their title in Abu Dhabi in November.
Since winning the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix at the start of June, Diego Botín’s crew have remained in touch with the top three on the leaderboard.
A big Race 5 win in Geneva ensured a 5th-place finish overall and means Los Gallos goes into their home event in 4th, just three points behind New Zealand, currently occupying the last Final spot.
Expect mixed conditions
Mac Agnese and Michael Menninger shake hands on the F50
That’s the verdict of U.S. SailGP Team wing trimmer Michael Menninger, who says the Atlantic Ocean is notoriously difficult due to changing conditions.
“It’s on the Atlantic Ocean, so it can be a bit of everything. We’ve got to prepare for big breeze and waves, or for not much wind – we’ve got to be ready for it all,” he said.
“As a team, we’re really looking forward to stringing together a couple of good races in an event. In Geneva we had three fourths, which was really good. So it’s about being more well-rounded and putting solid results on the board.
“I think the team’s capable of it. We’re sailing consistently around the course. Once we’re on the racecourse, we’re holding even or passing boats, not losing them. So it’s about getting off the start line in the top group and racing hard.”
‘A classic venue for this league’
Andrew Campbell and Anna Weis on the F50
This will be the fourth edition of the Spain Sail Grand Prix in Cádiz and Andrew Campbell says it has already become a favorite for the U.S. SailGP Team – and not just because of those impressive returns!
He said: “We’ve had podiums both years I was there – and Mac (Agnese), PK (Peter Kinney) and Taylor (Canfield) were on the team that won in Cádiz last year. So the team has had success there. We have history there. We know we can do it.
“Cádiz is a great venue. The sea wall is so cool, the fans are right there, and the open ocean can throw a wrench into things with sea state and wind – it can be really windy, or really light. It’s become a classic venue for this league, and I think we all enjoy going there. We’re looking forward to it.”
