Anna: It’s Nice To See Tangible Progress

U.S. SailGP Team grinder Anna Weis looks back on the DP World Spain Sail Grand Prix…

Anna Weis was pleased to see the U.S. SailGP Team’s efforts were matched with tangible results at the Spain Sail Grand Prix and pointed to greater consistency as the reason.
By going 3-12-11-6-8-5-4, the U.S. SailGP Team put 29 event points on the board – their best return since reaching the Final of the season opener in Dubai. It was the culmination of an intense month in Europe which has seen steady progress at each event.
Anna said: “It’s nice to see some tangible results from what we’ve been working on. It was a really challenging week and, as you saw, a lot of really good teams had bad races.
“It was all about consistency, and we did a better job of that on Sunday. It was just such a small racecourse and rougher sea state than we’ve normally seen - some swell - and just super puffy conditions. It was challenging, but I think we’re happy with how we sailed the boat and that we were able to climb back in some races.
Light conditions meant teams sailed in various four and five-up configurations across the weekend, sometimes leaving Anna as the team’s sole grinder while also being responsible for trimming the jib.
Anna explained: “A big thing for me is just making sure that whatever mode they’re calling in the starting line, I’m trimming the jib correctly. That’s a big priority. And obviously with the four-up sailing, grinding is a big thing, especially in those transitional conditions.
“It’s pretty big and heavy on the handle, so Saturday was a pretty physically demanding day – but also mentally demanding.
“But I feel like that’s where we have an advantage because a lot of the women in the fleet aren’t dedicated grinders. So a lot of the other women who aren’t used to grinding have to come up and grind in the fours.
“That adds another layer of challenge for other teams. But the fact that we can keep it consistent is definitely one of the good tools we have in our toolbox.”
With a break now until the season finale in Abu Dhabi on November 29-30, the U.S. SailGP Team will stay connected throughout – and Anna is looking forward to building on the positive momentum gained through the European leg of the season.
She said: “We’ll be continuing to have conversations with each other and working on everything we’ve taken away from the last three events.
“It’s been nice to have four events so close together because I feel like you can really build off what we’ve just learned – that sense of momentum.
“It’ll be really key for us to stay in touch and keep working together as a group to be ready for Abu Dhabi. I know it’ll come quickly, but if we don’t make good use of the time, it’ll make a big difference in how we prepare.”
