U.S. SailGP Team grinder Anna Weis says she is excited at the potential of making history this weekend after Martine Grael joined the Crew for the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix.
Grael, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, linked up with the U.S. SailGP Team in Geneva after Taylor Canfield and Harry Melges IV were ruled out by injuries ahead of the weekend.
When Anna and Martine compete together, it will be the first time two women have raced on an F50 in SailGP history.
Speaking ahead of the weekend, Anna said: “It’s quite a unique situation. What are the odds? When we found out about Taylor it was obviously very disappointing. When we found out about Harry, I thought it was April Fools’ to be honest!
“With everything that transpired we thought that the obvious choice was Martine to bring her in. She has the experience, she’s an incredible sailor, an incredible athlete and I’m really excited to be racing with her. It’ll actually be the first time that two women will be racing on an F50 so it’s a really exciting and historic time.”
The U.S. SailGP Team moved quickly to fill the driver’s seat with another talented athlete and Anna is not concerned about the change to the line-up following victory in Valencia last time out.
“It’s the nature of the sport - there are always going to be things that are out of your control,” Anna said. “What we can control is bringing in someone with loads of experience who’s an incredible athlete and we’re going to work and try to do the best that we can as a team and learn as much as we can.
“Ultimately the goal is to be in a position to race the Grand Final but we’re going to take it race-by-race and see what we can do here.”
The Switzerland Sail Grand Prix marks the first of three events that are expected to bring light-air conditions as the 13-strong fleet approaches November’s Grand Final in Abu Dhabi.
But Anna is not thinking about the conditions as the Championship race hots up with the U.S. SailGP Team in P3. She said: We just want to be the best all-round team and improve in any single condition. That’s the fun part about SailGP – you never know what you’re going to get.
“So you take the wins when you get them, in your speciality, and you always continue to work on that speciality but also things you need most help in. We’re going to try to take advantage of our strengths in the light air at these next events and hopefully make the Grand Final.”
