The BONDS Flying Roos continued their remarkable season by clinching a three-peat at the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix.
Tom Slingsby’s crew followed victories in Rio and Bermuda by beating Emirates GBR in a dramatic Final which went down to the wire – and beyond. Both teams protested the other during the final leg but the Umpire rejected both appeals, handing Australia another win.
After Saturday was declared exhibition racing only, three races were slated for Super Sunday with the usual 10-1 point format applying. Light-air rudders and foils were paired together with the large jib and 27.5-meter wing.Â
Prior to racing, the Roos hit debris in the Hudson but managed to make the start. Los Gallos, meanwhile, were also suffering with technical issues which ruled them out of an event they won 12 months prior.
In Race 1, the U.S. SailGP Team came steaming in at the bottom of the line along with Emirates GBR, the Brits taking the whole shot at Mark 1. From there, Dylan Fletcher’s crew went from strength to strength and never looked back.
Canfield and the Crew controlled P2 and held off the challenge of Artemis who climbed into P3 ahead of DS Automobiles France.Â
Things got better for the host nation in Race 2, leading at Mark 1 after timing the start to perfection. Positioned toward the back of the pack, the U.S. SailGP Team flew through a clear lane to take control. Australia secured P2 with Red Bull Italy home shortly after.
The start of Race 3 was marred by a collision between the U.S. SailGP Team, Mubadala Brazil and Italy. Thankfully, all athletes were quickly accounted for without any serious injuries sustained. But the race was over for all three teams.
In a shortened final fleet race, NorthStar won to secure a Final berth, followed home by ROCKWOOL Racing and - inevitably - the in-form Australians.Â
The Final was a classic. All three teams were at close quarters as the line turned white, but it was Australia and Emirates GBR who edged ahead when Canada fell off the foils approaching Gate 3.Â
A photo finish went the way of Australia and when Chief Umpire Craig Mitchell confirmed there had been no fouls in the final leg, the Roos were able to toast a hat-trick of wins.Â
