The U.S. SailGP Team has signed Martine Grael to drive for the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix in Geneva, with Taylor Canfield and Harry Melges both sidelined by injury. The appointment is specific to the Geneva event.
Grael is a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 49erFX (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020) and the first woman to drive an F50 in SailGP competition. Most recently a driver of the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team, she will take the helm of the U.S. F50 in Geneva alongside fellow Olympian and U.S. SailGP Team grinder Anna Weis.
"It’s been a tough week losing both Taylor and Harry to injury. With both of our drivers unavailable for Geneva, we decided to bring in Martine Grael," said Mike Buckley, Team Principal, CEO, & Co-Owner of the U.S. SailGP Team. "It’s not everyday that two doors unexpectedly close and another opens and in walks a 2-time Olympic gold medalist. Martine is a tremendous competitor, she is fully licensed to drive an F50, and her current experience is unmatched. Our team is ready to compete here in Geneva, and we are going to do it with two women onboard, which I am incredibly excited about.”
