PK: We Were Stoked To Go Racing!

U.S. SailGP Team grinder Peter Kinney reflects on the Germany Sail Grand Prix in Sassnitz

U.S. SailGP Team grinder Peter Kinney enjoyed his week in Sassnitz for the Germany Sail Grand Prix – and says the team cannot get back on the water soon enough to carry on that momentum.
A full week of training together paid off with P3, P9 and P4 finishes in the first three races on Saturday, leaving the U.S. SailGP Team well placed after three races.
The unfortunate collision with Emirates GBR in Race 4 ended the team’s weekend prematurely. But Peter saw more than enough prior to that to be encouraged.

He said: “We had a really good week. It was really good to get Michael (Menninger) and Andrew (Campbell) involved on the boat, and they definitely had a big influence on the way we sailed and raced.
“Their influence paid off. It showed in those first three races and halfway through the fourth race on Saturday. As well as that, having Marcus (Lynch) get our coaching, debriefing, and pre-briefing processes set up was really good. Having him there was awesome.”
So what was the biggest difference between Sassnitz and previous events from PK’s perspective?
“We were stoked to really go racing,” he explained. “We were competing with everyone. That was awesome and great to be a part of.
“Obviously, the result in Race 2 wasn’t ideal, but we were still in the mix. Race 3 was another good result. Hitting 101 km/h in an actual race scenario was really cool. Staying up there with those teams, racing the boat and not just holding on, was always the goal. I think we accomplished that quite well.
PK added: “A lot of the other teams were like, ‘Holy s***! Those guys are going really well!’ They were like, ‘Damn, we’re going to have to be worried about these guys at some point.’ That’s the great news. We were able to get off the line pretty well and hold our position, which is great.
“Everything was going in the right direction – until it wasn’t. While everyone was disappointed with the way it ended, if we take a step back and look at the whole week, we’re really happy with our progress. We can’t get back on the water soon enough!”
