PK: We’re Making Progress

U.S. SailGP Team grinder Peter ‘PK’ Kinney reflects on Spain and the season so far…

Grinder Peter Kinney believes the U.S. SailGP Team is making steady progress as Season 5 of SailGP heads toward its finale.
The Crew picked up their best event points tally since reaching the Final in Dubai at the start of the season, going 3-12-11-6-8-5-4 at the recent DP World Spain Sail Grand Prix.
An overall P8 capped a busy period of three events in a month, including trips to Saint-Tropez, Geneva and Cádiz. Reflecting on recent improvements and momentum as a whole, Peter is pleased with the team's overall direction.
He said: “It’s been one hell of a season. But you’ve got to learn somehow; things happen for a reason. All these experiences - good, bad and everything in between, make you stronger and better.
“In some ways we’d love to keep going. Thankfully, the next season isn’t too far away, so it’s not a long wait. But maybe it’s also a good thing – we can reset and start afresh in six or seven weeks after Abu Dhabi.
“Most importantly, the results we’ve gotten recently show we’re headed in the right direction. We can see why the top teams are where they are – they’ve got so much experience, and they’re really tight-knit groups. We’re striving to catch up to them.”
One area where PK says a big emphasis has been placed across recent events is communications and debriefing – and he believes the benefit of that work has been felt on the water.
The U.S. SailGP Team is headed in the right direction, according to grinder Peter Kinney
“We’ve kind of restructured our debriefing and our coaching and video and data reviews,” he explained. “With Marcus (Lynch) getting more in the flow of things and having Andrew (Campbell) and Michael (Menninger) come in, they’ve brought a lot of experience.
“Those guys are used to being in an office with the same group all the time, breaking things down, learning, and developing new processes. Their expertise and experience in doing that really helps us.
“After a day of racing or practice, we either all get together or some people make the call to do so and really dive deep into whatever issues we’re having.
“Clearly, going from Saturday into Sunday in Spain, that helped a lot. We still have a ways to go for sure, but the good news was that out of seven races, we had five good ones and two that weren’t great – and you’ll take that every time.”
There’s now an extended period of rest for the fleet before Season 5 concludes with the Grand Final at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Sail Grand Prix on November 29-30. As ever, it’s eyes forward for the U.S. SailGP Team.
“Abu Dhabi will be interesting – everyone will have had a nice long break going into it,” PK said. “It’ll be a super tight racecourse; there’s physically not a lot of space in that little area.
“The last time we were there, there were barely foiling conditions the entire time. But the week leading up to it was around 10–15 knots, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.
“These six weeks between Abu Dhabi will be a real opportunity to capitalize on our learnings and progress – hopefully putting that on display there. I think Abu Dhabi will be a very clear preview of what’s to come next season.”
