The ROCKWOOL France Sail Grand Prix provided plenty of thrills and spills – here’s everything you might have missed!
Published 09/16/2025
It might only have been a single day, but the ROCKWOOL France Sail Grand Prix packed plenty in!
Thunderstorms in the area meant racing in Saint-Tropez was canceled due to safety fears on Saturday morning. Not to worry, we’re straight onto the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix this weekend in Geneva!
But before then, let’s bookend the France Sail Grand Prix with 5 Things You Missed…
Red Bull gives Italy wings!
New to SailGP in Season 5, Red Bull Italy has been making steady progress under driver Ruggero Tita. The one thing they were missing was a statement race win.
Not anymore. Jimmy Spithill’s crew ticked that one off in Race 3 on Saturday, finishing ahead of Los Gallos (2nd) and New Zealand (3rd) to claim their first win since joining the league.
Something cold and refreshing to toast that win? We suspect a few cans of Red Bull were on hand to mark the occasion!
U.S. SailGP Team continues points hunt
The U.S. SailGP Team has shown steady progress in the last three events, finishing in the points in every eligible race since Portsmouth.
That continued on the French Riviera with Taylor Canfield and co. going 8-10-7, with a technical issue in Race 2 denying them the chance to extend that run to four races.
CEO, Co-Owner and strategist Mike Buckley said: “What gets me excited is that consistency of being in the points. We’re seeing progress internally.
“For those of you at home, you probably don’t see it yet. But I think we’re on the verge of some increased performance and getting up into the middle of the pack on a consistent basis.”
Germany continues progress on home waters
Agonizingly close to making the Final on Super Sunday in Sassnitz, Erik Heil and the Germany SailGP Team, presented by Deutsche Bank, put in another impressive display on the Côte d’Azur.
After finishing P10 in Race 1, they went 5-5-2 through the rest of Friday, leaving them well placed in 4th place - only three points behind the Black Foils - when racing was called to a premature end.
Keep an eye out for Germany throughout the rest of the season…
BONDS Flying Roos endure challenging weekend
They flew out of the blocks in Race 1 but that was as good as it got for the BONDS Flying Roos, who came into the weekend tied with the Black Foils at the summit.
A pair of P10 finishes followed by a P4 made for a disappointing weekend for Tom Slingsby’s crew, who lost two places and slipped to 3rd in the Championship standings as a result.
To compound issues, the Roos came out on the wrong side of a penalty call for not giving room when rounding a mark - the beneficiaries? Old friends New Zealand, who finished the weekend in 2nd place and top of the overall standings!
High-speed configuration leads to frantic racing!
The U.S. SailGP Team joined Germany in a drag race to Mark 1 in Race 4 in Saint-Tropez
The previous SailGP speed record was set in Saint-Tropez back in 2022, with hosts France hitting 99.94 km/hr. Driver Quentin Delapierre predicted a similarly impressive showing in advance – but it was Los Gallos who almost delivered!
The 18m wings, high-speed foils and rudders were put to use on Friday and resulted in frenetic French racing. It was Diego Botín and co. who harnessed the power of nature best, hitting 99.9 km/hr approaching Mark 1 in Race 4.
The flip side of this was that - when the wind dropped - teams did not have the same power and that led to plenty of unpredictability on the race course.
SailGP continues to innovate and push boundaries, meaning it surely won’t be long before ROCKWOOL Denmark’s new record of 103.93 km/hr is under serious threat!
