Driver Taylor Canfield says the U.S. SailGP Team is excited to build on progress in Sassnitz last time out, when the ROCKWOOL France Sail Grand Prix gets underway on Friday.
Speaking at Thursday’s pre-event press conference alongside fellow drivers Quentin Delapierre, Nicolai Sehested, Diego Botín and Peter Burling, Taylor was asked about changes to the U.S. SailGP Team roster.
Michael Menninger and Andrew Campbell both got on the water for the first time in Germany, while coach Marcus Lynch has added more depth to the coaching staff.
“It’s great having Michael, Andrew and Marcus joining the team,” Taylor said. “They bring a wealth of knowledge from not only SailGP and previous seasons, but also from the America’s Cup, and some other high-performance racing. They’ve stepped into these roles and are very confident doing a great job.

“Obviously, there’s a lot of growth to come from all of us. We sailed well in Sassnitz leading up to that first day. We’re excited to keep growing and continue that growth in Saint-Tropez.”
The U.S. SailGP Team went 3-9-4 to start Saturday in Sassnitz, and Taylor is keen to build on that this weekend, with high-speed racing conditions forecast on the French Riviera.
He said: “We’re all just out here trying to grow. We’ve made a big effort and substitutions. Things are shaping up and we’re going well. We’ve addressed the incident and moved forward, and we’re excited to get out racing here in Saint-Tropez.
“Again, huge thanks to the Tech Team in SailGP Technologies and apologies to the Brits, again, but that’s racing and we’ve seen bad crashes in SailGP before. Hopefully the last but I doubt that!”
Ahead of the press conference, it was announced that an F50 would be installed at SailGP Technologies in Southampton, UK, enabling new and existing athletes to practice in real-life simulations – something that has not been an option before now.
“It would be huge,” Taylor said. “It’s an exciting step for the league and an exciting step for all the teams and new teams entering.
“I’m thinking back to Season 1 when we had the extra training time and how valuable that was. We’ll take every minute on the water we can get, that’s for sure.”
