We round up everything you might have missed from an action-packed Germany Sail Grand Prix
Published 08/19/2025
The first-ever Germany Sail Grand Prix promised plenty and delivered more, with drama, high speeds and excitement aplenty!
Searching for their first Season 5 win after two final appearances, Quentin Delapierre and France overcame a crash in practice on Friday to take home the win.
Here’s five things you might have missed from Sassnitz…
New speed record for Denmark as U.S. SailGP Team tops 100km/h!
Winds in the coastal resort of Sassnitz in Northern Germany were higher than forecast in the run up to the event. That led to some exciting practice racing on Friday that carried into the weekend.
In Race 3 on Saturday, ROCKWOOL Denmark set a new SailGP speed record as they hit an incredible 103.93 km/hr, while the U.S. SailGP Team also topped 100 km/hr.
The previous record, which belonged to the France SailGP Team, had stood at 99.98 km/hr since Season 3.
Speaking afterward, driver Nicolai Sehested said: “It felt pretty fast! Once you get over around 90km/hr, the boat is just shaking and you’re just trying to point it in the right direction!
“It’s very cool to break the record. There’s a bit of luck to it – it’s a combination of getting the right puff, just as you get into the power zone, but also how much risk you’re willing to take.”
Key dates for 2026/2027 seasons locked in
The inaugural Germany Sail Grand Prix was a huge success and over the weekend, SailGP confirmed they return to Sassnitz for the next two years.
Dates of August 22-23 in 2026 and August 21-22 in 2027 have been added to the calendar.
There was more good news with Perth confirmed as a venue through 2028, Bermuda locked in through 2027 and, best of all, New York secured through 2027, too.
After more than 20,000 fans flocked to Portsmouth for Event 7 this season, the UK city will host SailGP again for the next two years, while Dubai is confirmed for 2027 as well.
Germany steps up in front of home crowd
The Germany SailGP Team almost reached its first-ever Final on Sunday
More than 13,000 SailGP fans turned out in Sassnitz to help ensure the first Germany Sail Grand Prix was a huge success.
Supporters of the Germany SailGP Team presented by Deutsche Bank had plenty to cheer as their heroes won Race 1 in front of a partisan crowd on the breakwater.
Erik Heil and his crew continued their strong performance across the weekend, narrowly missing out on their first-ever Final in Race 7 as the French team pipped them to the final spot alongside Emirates GBR and BONDS Flying Roos.
Formula 1 superstar and Germany SailGP Team Co-Owner Sebastian Vettel is a man used to speed and he was in attendance and treated fans to a fly-by on the German Team’s F50 on Day 2.
Andrew and Michael get on board together for first time
After being limited in their involvement for the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix, U.S. SailGP Team duo Michael Menninger and Andrew Campbell both got plenty of reps in Germany.
For the highly-experienced Campbell, this is his second stint as a member of the U.S. SailGP Team. But for Menninger, a decorated sailor boasting America’s Cup experience, it was a SailGP debut.
While the weekend did not deliver the results the U.S. SailGP Team was aiming for, P3 and P4 finishes on Saturday indicate progress to build on in future events.
