REPORT: Los Gallos beats Australia in dramatic Final to clinch Switzerland Sail Grand Prix

Los Gallos won the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix in Geneva to claim its third event win of the season, beating the BONDS Flying Roos on the reach to the final mark.

Tom Slingsby’s crew had led for the first three legs of a shortened Final but, at Gate 3, Los Gallos took the impetus and secured the win by stealing a march on the Roos.

Hosts Explora Journeys Swiss clinched their Final spot by winning Race B5 but, for the second time this season, ended up finishing P4. Despite the best efforts of the hastily recruited Martine Grael - including a P2 to open up Super Sunday - the U.S. SailGP Team could not add to its points tally for the season.

The U.S. SailGP Team gets off the line first in Race A3 of the Switzerland Sail Grand Prix

With two events to go, it’s Artemis SaiGP Team that moves into P3, just three points ahead of the U.S. SailGP Team. Emirates GBR is three points back in P5.

In windier conditions than Day 1, it was Los Gallos who started as they meant to go on by winning Race A3. Penalties in the start box left ROCKWOOL Racing and Mubadala Brazil with work to do while the U.S. SailGP Team crossed the line first to own Mark 1.

Los Gallos took the win, followed by the U.S. SailGP Team, with DS Automobiles Team France narrowly missing out on P3 to Germany Deutsche Bank after steaming in from the layline at the final mark.

In Race B4, the Aussies led from start to finish, continuing as they had left off in Saturday’s final race. Emirates GBR briefly looked like overhauling NorthStar but the Canadians held on to clinch P2.

The wind continued to pick up and, in Race A4, DS Team France hit 47kph on the reach to M1. Despite that flying start, it was ROCKWOOL Racing that took the win in dramatic fashion after splitting the course at Gate 3.

Nicolai Sehested outfoxed Quentin Delapierre at the final mark to take five big points. The French team were hit with a killer penalty for failing to give room at the mark. The U.S. SailGP Team came home in P7.

It was hosts Explora Journeys Swiss who booked their Final berth in the day’s penultimate fleet race after going three wide with Black Foils and Red Bull Italy on the reach to M1. The Kiwis rolled over the top but could only secure P2 – not enough to clinch a Final ticket with the Swiss instead profiting in a winner-takes-all scenario.

The day’s final fleet race saw an all-Scandinavian battle with ROCKWOOL coming out on top to claim their third win in five races, ahead of Nathan Outteridge and Artemis.

The U.S. SailGP Team had been as high as P3 at one stage but could only come home in P5 after the French climbed a place to close the gap on the top five in the race to Abu Dhabi.

With changeable wind throughout the day, the best conditions were saved until last. The four teams foiled to M1 where it was advantage Australia. However, that all changed at Gate 3 when Los Gallos went left and into a lead they only built upon. For the second event in succession, Australia had to settle for second place.

It all means the BONDS Flying Roos are set for the Grand Final in Abu Dhabi with Los Gallos now odds-on to clinch P2. Below them, the three-way battle between the U.S. SailGP Team, Artemis and Emirates GBR looks set to go to the wire.
