Catch up on day one of racing on Germany’s beautiful Baltic coast

As the Rolex SailGP Championship returns to the Baltic Sea resort town of Sassnitz, Germany for the ninth event of the 2026 season, the Black Foils of New Zealand and the Bonds Flying Roos of Australia lead their groups with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Split fleet racing continues following its introduction in Portsmouth, and for the Sassnitz event, the U.S. SailGP Team was placed in Group B along with the Bonds Flying Roos, Artemis Sweden, Northstar Canada, Emirates GBR and Germany by Deutsche Bank.
Group B opened racing proceedings for the weekend, with the Flying Roos sailing a commanding race in windy conditions that led to spectacular average speeds. The Australian squad led throughout, but after running a strong race that saw the U.S. SailGP team regularly swapping P2 and P3 with Canada, misfortune struck at the last moment when the Crew’s yacht dropped off its foils rounding the final marker, dropping Taylor Canfield and the rest of the team to P4 overall, behind Canada and Sweden.
Group A headed out next for its first of three races of the day, with the Black Foils commanding things ahead of a fairly chaotic field that saw Los Gallos of Spain hit with a penalty for impeding on DS Automobiles France. The race ended with Explora Journeys Swiss and Red Bull Italy picking up P2 and P3 behind the New Zealand squad.
Race B2 followed with the Flying Roos once again looking unstoppable, ahead of a very changeable midfield within which the U.S. SailGP remained throughout, coming home with a second P4 of the day.
Race A2 then saw DS Automobiles France lead throughout, albeit being constantly hounded by the Black Foils. Those teams took P1 and P2 respectively, with Rockwool Racing Denmark completing the podium.

The final Group B race of the day was dominated by the German squad in front of a jubilant home crowd, despite the squalls of rain that started pelting the course towards the end. The U.S. SailGP Team started their third race strongly, looking in contention for a podium, but in a repeat of the first race’s misfortune, came off the foils with moments to go and dropped down to P5. Germany took P1 ahead of Canada and Sweden.
The day finished in spectacular fashion with Race A3 when the French boat hit 107km/h to set a new SailGP speed record, although the French squad could only manage P2, behind Los Gallos and ahead of the Black Foils.
A frustrating day for the U.S. resulted in five points being collected, placing the Crew sixth and last in Group B, although still ahead of Group A’s Italy, Denmark and Brazil in terms of overall points.
