Mac: There Is A Lot Of Work Ahead

Grinder Mac Agnese says the U.S. SailGP Team has two clear focus areas ahead of the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix.
Difficult conditions in New York - which led to a three-up configuration in Race One - contributed to a tough weekend, as the U.S. SailGP Team went 10-10-7-12-7-8 on the Hudson.
Mac said: “Starting is still a big one we're working on, and overall communication on the boat is another area we’ve highlighted as needing improvement. Those are our two main focus points heading into the next event.
“Overall, it was a disappointing event for the team. It definitely highlighted a lot of the work we still need to do, which is a useful takeaway – but obviously, the result wasn’t good. So there’s a lot of work ahead.”
Light wind conditions in New York on Saturday meant the fleet was reduced to just three athletes in the F50 for Race One. For the U.S. SailGP Team, it was driver Taylor Canfield joining wing trimmer Jeremy Wilmot and grinder Mac in front of Governors Island.
“That was the first time our team had used that three-up configuration,” Mac confirmed. “I think it’s the first time since probably Season 2 that most teams have done it, so it had been a while.
“We knew it was a possibility because they told us before the day started, but the final call came pretty late, and we expected four-up conditions. So we didn’t get a lot of time to prepare.
“Everyone had to adjust quickly, and it was definitely a challenging race – especially getting up to speed and figuring out everyone’s role with one fewer person on board. Next time, we’ll be more prepared – hopefully it doesn’t come to that again, though.”
