2025 Sydney Sail Grand Prix Results, Key Moments & Race Highlights
Take a look back at the five previous editions of the KPMG Sydney Sail Grand Prix
Published 02/22/2026
The KPMG Sydney Sail Grand Prix is an ever-present on the SailGP calendar, as 2026 marks the sixth edition of this highly anticipated event.
There will be 11 boats on the startline this time around with New Zealand Black Foils and DS Automobiles France missing following their collision in Auckland last time out.
Previous events in the Emerald City have not lacked drama or excitement. It’s time to delve into the archives…
2025 Season
With France back in the fleet for the third stop of the 2025 SailGP Season, it was anticipated all 12 international teams would be in the start box for the first time.
However, the U.S. SailGP Team’s involvement was curtailed during Friday’s practice after capsizing while being towed.
A chaotic Friday saw Germany SailGP Team presented by Deutsche Bank and Mubadala Brazil penalized for a collision. Erik Kosegarten-Heil’s team suffered another deduction for an incident involving Red Bull Italy.
When the racing began, Australia delivered in front of their supporters, going 3-2-1-1 on Day 1 and following that up with finishes of 3-3-1 on Day 2 to secure their place in the winner-takes-all Final.
Joined by Emirates GBR (5-1-3-3-1-6-7) and NorthStar Canada (7-8-5-4-4-2-4), Tom Slingsby’s crew were penalised early on and could not make up ground, with Emirates GBR capping their fine start to the season with a first win under Dylan Fletcher.
2024 Season
Six podium finishes in their last seven events had failed to yield a win for Australia prior to the 2024 Sydney Sail Grand Prix. But that all changed on home waters as the Roos saw off the Kiwis - driven by substitute Nathan Outteridge - and ROCKWOOL Denmark.
Speaking afterwards, Tom Slingsby said: “To win after coming so close so many times and in front of our home crowd of Sydney with our family and friends watching, it really doesn’t get much better than this.
“To win in Australia, you couldn’t have written a better script for us, it was a mark in the ground where New Zealand had two event wins in a row, and we were up against the ropes on our home turf so to deliver like that is amazing.”
Earlier, Germany secured their first-ever fleet race win after almost capsizing the previous day, while the U.S. SailGP Team picked up a P3 to close out the weekend.
2023 Season
A major weather event in Sydney saw that racing was canceled after a dramatic Day 1 in which France and Quentin Delapierre won all three of the races that took place.
Great Britain grinder Matt Gotrel fell overboard the team’s F50 and was dragged to the finish line before being pulled back onboard – miraculously without any injuries. The weather wreaked havoc at the Tech Base, with several boats - most notably the Canadians’ - suffering damage to their wing sails.
Jimmy Spithill and the U.S. SailGP Team had finished the day in P2 after going 2-2-5 in what Canada driver Phil Robertson said was ‘some of the most wind I have ever seen in my life’.
2022 Season
Not for the last time, Slingsby and Australia delivered in front of their home supporters in Sydney Harbor, beating the U.S. SailGP Team (2nd) and Los Gallos (3rd) in windy conditions.
The U.S. SailGP Team recovered from a P6 in Race 1 to go 6-3-2-3-4 and reach the event final. But the hosts took an early lead and never looked back to move one step closer to the Grand Final showdown in San Francisco – the season’s next and final event.
2019 Season
History was made on Australia’s East Coast in 2019 as the first-ever SailGP Championship began against the backdrop of Sydney Harbor - and it was an event to remember for the Australian team.
Six teams lined up for the maiden event, with the U.S. SailGP Team joined by Australia, China, France, Great Britain and Japan. The Aussies were only off the podium once, going 4-1-1-1-1 across five fleet races.
They were joined in the two-team Final by Japan (1-2-2-2-3) with Slingsby’s crew claiming victory in SailGP’s maiden event. They would go on to win four of the five events that season and claim the first Championship.
