REPORT: Roos Secure Auckland Win; U.S. SailGP Team Finishes With P1

All the action from another strong showing for the U.S. SailGP Team in the southern hemisphere

The BONDS Flying Roos secured back-to-back wins in Auckland as they won the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix on Super Sunday.
For the U.S. SailGP Team, P3 and P1 finishes capped another successful weekend, adding a further four points to the Rolex SailGP Championship standings and keeping the Crew in 5th place overall.
Day 2 brought changes to the format after the fleet was reduced to 11 teams on Saturday. DS Automobiles France and New Zealand Black Foils were ruled out following damage sustained in their collision at the start of Race 3.
That meant the remaining teams were split into two groups, each contesting two races and with points awarded on a 5-4-3-2-1-0 scale. Points from Day 1 carried over, with the three teams with the most overall points heading to the final showdown.
Group A – FRA*, NZL*, GBR, GER, BRA, CAN, ITA
Group B – AUS, ESP, DEN, SWE, SUI, USA
*Not racing but still sorted into groups because both teams started the weekend.
In the first race of Super Sunday, Germany Deutsche Bank timed the start to perfection, steaming through to cross the line first in an uncharacteristically quiet start box. Red Bull Italy got too high and as they fought to regain control; NorthStar Canada had the advantage at Mark One.
Giles Scott’s crew hit 100 km/hr at one stage, battling with 2025 Champions GBR. It all came down to the final mark with the Brits getting the better of the Canadians to cross the line in 1st.
Group B got underway with Switzerland, Denmark and the U.S. SailGP Team starting well. However, Taylor Canfield’s crew were hit with a penalty for not making room for ROCKWOOL.
Having shaken that off, the U.S. SailGP Team fought back well to take P3. First across the line by a distance, though, were the BONDS Flying Roos, followed by Artemis.
Emirates GBR secured a second win in Race 5, having led at M1. They had to hold off the challenge of Germany and Canada, though, and despite a scare when they lost speed at the penultimate gate, Dylan Fletcher’s crew held firm. The Brits were followed home by Germany Deutsche Bank and NorthStar Canada.
After a strong start to open the day, the U.S. SailGP Team built on that display in the day’s final fleet race. Timed to perfection in the start box, the Crew led at M1 and delivered an impressive race from there to hold off the last two SailGP Champions.
The decision to look for greater pressure on the right-hand side of the course paid off as Canfield and co. saw off the threat of Artemis and then Los Gallos to take their first win of the 2026 Season.
In the Final, the last three Champions of SailGP went head to head in what proved to be a classic. However, it was Tom Slingsby’s team that secured a repeat of last year, holding firm to breeze across the line ahead of Emirates GBR (P2) and Los Gallos (P3).
SailGP returns to Australia for the KPMG Sydney Sail Grand Prix on February 28-March 1.
