Driver Taylor Canfield sees the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix as a potential turning point in the U.S. SailGP Team’s season, as we approach the campaign’s halfway point.
July’s trip to Britain’s South Coast will be the sixth event of SailGP Season Five and marks the start of the European leg of the calendar.
After going 10-10-7-12-7-8 in New York City last month, Taylor and co. are aiming to springboard from the Solent.
He said: “This feels like a turning point. We're just over halfway through the season, so it's a natural time to regroup. We’re focusing heavily on our strategy heading into the upcoming events.
“The goal is to feel as prepared as possible so we can hit the ground running on the first training day.
“Overall, New York was a great event. Of course, it was unfortunate to finish the way we did, but I think we made some improvements. There's still a lot of work to do, so it's back to the grind between events. We've been pushing to keep improving before Portsmouth.”
The focus ahead of that trip to the UK will be on two areas, Taylor says, after some tough starts in New York left the U.S. SailGP Team with work to do in order to climb up the fleet.
“We've been putting more emphasis into our starting strategy and technique, especially adjusting for different wind ranges,” he explained.
“In addition, we’re working on refining our communication and our approach to each specific racecourse. We're trying to do more prep ahead of time, so when we hit the water at a new venue, we're ready to attack the course right away.”
Taylor added: “We've shown time and again that when we do our jobs and sail the boat well, we can fight back into the fleet.
“We just need to keep bringing that consistency and energy. When we’re dialed in with each other and our communication is strong, we’ve had our best results.”
