REPORT: Los Gallos Ends Australia's Winning Run In Spectacular Canada Final

Los Gallos claimed its first win of the 2026 Season and stopped the BONDS Flying Roos at three straight event wins

Los Gallos broke the BONDS Flying Roos’ winning run by clinching victory in a dramatic Final on Day 2 of the Canada Sail Grand Prix.
It was Diego Botín’s first win of the 2026 SailGP Season and moves the Spanish into the top three ahead of next month’s Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Portsmouth.
For the U.S. SailGP Team, P1 and P2 finishes on Super Sunday weren’t quite enough to squeeze into the Final but claimed P6 overall, adding five points to their season tally.
For Emirates GBR, however, the day was over before it had even begun. A nosedive in the warm-up resulted in significant wing damage that prematurely ended their day. Thankfully, all athletes onboard the F50 were swiftly reported to be unharmed.
Artemis punched their Final ticket with a commanding display in the first race of Day 2. Nathan Outteridge timed his start to perfection, nudging ahead of the U.S. SailGP Team to lead at Mark 1.
The Swedes never looked back despite the best efforts of Taylor Canfield and co., who pushed hard around the course.
Fortune favors the brave, as the saying goes, and Los Gallos driver Botín evidently lives by that mantra. A gold medalist at the 2024 Olympic Games, he forced the Spanish F50 through a non-existent gap in the start box and was rewarded for his timing and bravery.
Chief Umpire Craig Mitchell ruled the Spanish were within their rights and subsequently put the hammer down to lead at M1. Despite the best efforts of hosts NorthStar (P2) and the BONDS Flying Roos (P3), nobody could catch the 2024 Season winners.
The U.S. SailGP Team’s starting continues to go from strength-to-strength and so it proved once more in Race 4B. Canfield nailed the start and got the whole shot at M1, with Explora Swiss close behind.
The two teams were neck-and-neck for much of the race but the Crew eventually pulled clear ahead of the final mark rounding to add five big points to their event tally.
With Australia already sure of a Final spot, the day’s final fleet race was a shoot-out between the nations looking to sneak into the four-team shot at glory.
The Flying Roos romped home but the battle between NorthStar, New Zealand and Spain virtually went to a photo finish. For the Black Foils to have any chance of marking their return with a Final berth, they needed ROCKWOOL to be sandwiched between them and Spain. But it was not to be, despite a credible P3 for Peter Burling’s team.
That meant Australia - with three fleet race wins - was joined by Artemis, Explora Swiss and Los Gallos in the Final.
Even with the wind slowly dying, the Final lived up to its billing. Four wide at M1, it was Los Gallos that edged out the Swiss to take control.
However, with two legs to go, Artemis looked well placed to overhaul Spain. Outteridge’s crew - searching for their first event win since joining the league - kept biting at Spanish heels until the final meters when Los Gallos pulled away to clinch a memorable win.
Switzerland took P3, meaning a P4 finish for the Roos, ending their run of consecutive victories at three while strengthening their grip on P1 in the Championship.
SailGP returns on July 25-26 for the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Portsmouth.
