Published 11/12/2025
The 2025 SailGP season is approaching its conclusion in Abu Dhabi, with the Grand Final set to decide the winner of this season’s Rolex Championship and the accompanying $2million prize.
Currently 4th, defending Champions Los Gallos have work to do if they are to reach the Grand Final, while four-time winners the BONDS Flying Roos face stiff competition from Emirates GBR and New Zealand.
Ahead of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Sail Grand Prix presented by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council on November 29-30, here’s everything you need to know about a thrilling season of SailGP…
New Zealand Black Foils celebrate winning the Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix
Emirates Dubai Sail Grand Prix presented by P&O Marinas, November 23-24, 2024
1st - New Zealand
2nd - Emirates Great Britain
3rd - U.S. Sail GP Team
The 2025 season’s curtain raiser saw two new teams join the fleet in Mubadala Brazil and Red Bull Italy. However, due to the F50 build process, France’s potential new ownership team elected not to compete and were awarded compensatory points instead.
The campaign’s opener saw repeat winners in Dubai with Peter Burling’s Black Foils securing a dominant win in the Final. The Kiwis went 2-3-5-1-7 in the fleet races to secure their final spot alongside Emirates GBR – led by returning driver Dylan Fletcher – and Taylor Canfield’s U.S. SailGP Team.
It was Canfield and co. who won the first race of the season in light wind in the desert, going 1-7-7-6-2 overall.
A perfect start from the Black Foils in the Final put them out in front before Gate 2 when the U.S. was rewarded for taking the right-hand gate. But New Zealand’s experience told and after diving inside GBR at the fourth gate, the Kiwis never looked back.

ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix, January 18-19, 2025
1st - BONDS Flying Roos
2nd - Los Gallos
3rd - Emirates GBR
SailGP arrived in New Zealand for the first time as 2025 got underway. With it came the brand-new high-speed T-Foils, replacing the L-Foils teams had been using since 2019. Thinner, lighter and therefore faster than their predecessors, the new foils were made from machined titanium and carbon, reducing drag at high speed.
France had been due to rejoin the fleet in Auckland, however, a late technical issue delayed their return. NorthStar Canada were forced to withdraw ahead of Day when flight controller Billy Gooderham was injured in practice prior to racing, after being hit ‘by a wall of water’. Fortunately, Gooderham made a quick recovery and was back on the mend soon after.
On the water, Emirates GBR continued their impressive start to the season by posting finishes of 1-2-9-4-2-4-6, while the BONDS Flying Roos went 5-1-2-2-1-2-12 to reach the Final. Newcomers Red Bull Italy also picked up three P3s in testing conditions in Auckland.
Australia ran out winners in the Final, seeing off Spain after GBR fell off the foils in the first maneuver and lost ground they were unable to make up.

1st - Emirates GBR
2nd - NorthStar Canada
3rd - BONDS Flying Roos
It was one in, one out, in Sydney as France made their season debut. However the U.S. SailGP Team was sidelined after suffering wing damage during a capsize while being towed to practice, forcing them to miss the event.
Fresh from winning on their rivals’ turf in Auckland, the BONDS Flying Roos were imperious in front of their own fans (3-2-1-1-3-3-1), with Tom Slingsby’s crew ensuring they were never out of the podium positions.
Emirates GBR (5-1-3-3-1-6-7) and Fletcher also caught the eye to qualify for a third straight event final. Joining them were NorthStar Canada, whose impressive Day 2 (4-2-4) did the trick.
The Roos were penalized in the start box ahead of the Final for infringing Canada and didn’t recover. The Canadians enjoyed a healthy lead into the fifth leg but Britain overhauled Giles Scott’s crew and held off NorthStar to clinch their first win since the Canada Sail Grand Prix in Season 4.

1st - North Star Canada
2nd - New Zealand
3rd - BONDS Flying Roos
With three events down, there had yet to be a repeat winner, and so it proved again as the fleet moved to the United States for the first of three events. ROCKWOOL Denmark’s event was over after Race 1, suffering damage after colliding with a mark rounding.
Light winds and a tight course in the Port of Los Angeles made for tricky conditions – not that Burling and the Black Foils minded. They went 1-1-9-2-9-2-4 while neighbors Australia posted finishes of 10-3-1-3-5-1-7. Canfield and the Crew picked up results of 7-8-4-5 on Day 1 in front of a partisan home crowd on the West Coast.
In the Final, Canada secured their first event win since March 2023 – their first under Scott. However, it was the Black Foils who had the inside line at Mark 1 with Slingsby and the Aussies shut out.
The crucial moment came at Gate 2 when New Zealand and Canada split the course. When the Kiwis fell off the foils in leg three, NorthStar took advantage to clinch their first event win since Season 3.

1st - Los Gallos
2nd - NorthStar Canada
3rd - France
After winning in Los Angeles the previous weekend, NorthStar Canada made a similarly impressive start up the West Coast in San Francisco, going 5-1-2-1 on Day 1 to top the leaderboard.
Slingsby’s Australia were also on form, placing 2-3-3-4 to put themselves in contention despite tricky sea state in San Francisco. For the U.S. SailGP Team, a pair of dramatic nosedives headlined a tricky weekend.
There was drama awaiting on Day 2. Australia were set for the event Final until their wing collapsed seconds before the start of Race 7, ruling them out. France - just a point behind - were the beneficiaries, joining Los Gallos and Canada in the Final.
Reigning Champions Spain became the fifth different winners in Season 5 after splitting the course at Gate 1, a strategic decision that paid off for Diego Botín’s crew who finished with a nine-minute lead over second-placed Canada.

Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix, June 7-8, 2025
1st - Los Gallos
2nd - New Zealand
3rd - France
A hat-trick of U.S. events culminated beneath the shadow of the Statue of Liberty. The stars were out in force - including GRAMMY-award winning U.S. SailGP Team board member DJ Khaled.
The start box was full once more after the postponed ENEL Brazil Sail Grand Prix enabled SailGP Technologies to upgrade the fleet’s wingsails. But it was a tough weekend for the newly-branded BONDS Flying Roos - purchased by Hollywood superstars Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds - who finished 6th.
The weekend belonged to Botín and Los Gallos who became the first team to clinch multiple event wins in Season 5. A stellar Day 1, going 1-4-3, secured their place in Sunday’s Final along with New Zealand and France. Victory for Spain moved them top of the Rolex SailGP Championship, while Quentin Delapierre’s France recorded consecutive podium finishes.

Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix, July 19-20, 2025
1st - New Zealand
2nd - Emirates GBR
3rd - Switzerland
On home waters, Fletcher and the Emirates GBR Team made a stunning start in front of more than 20,000 fans lining the seawall in Portsmouth. They were rewarded with a series of fine results from their heroes, going 1-2-3-2-3-6.
New Zealand (2-4-1-11-1-5-1) was also strong, securing their place in another Final. For France, 3rd last time out in the Empire State, a wing collapse in practice meant they sat out Day 1.
The drama did not stop there. A spectator boat on the course caused Race 7 to be abandoned and restarted, while GBR, Spain and the U.S. SailGP Team all endured technical issues.
In the end, the Black Foils saw off hosts Great Britain and first-time Finalists Switzerland to claim their first victory since the season opener in Dubai.
Quentin Delapierre and France celebrate winning the Germany Sail Grand Prix
Germany Sail Grand Prix, August 16-17, 2025
1st - France
2nd - BONDS Flying Roos
3rd - Emirates GBR
France driver Delapierre delivered a remarkable victory at the first-ever Germany Sail Grand Prix after being hospitalized by a practice accident that saw him faceplant the cockpit on the French F50.
Released with a clean bill of health, Delapierre inspired the French to their first event win of Season 5, despite windy conditions in the small town of Sassnitz in northern Germany – beating out the Aussies and Emirates GBR in the Final.
Great Britain went 1-2-3 on Super Sunday after colliding with the U.S. SailGP Team in Race 4 on Saturday.
It was Les Bleus, however, who clinched the win despite Britain making the better start.

1st - Emirates GBR
2nd - New Zealand
3rd - Los Gallos
For the third successive event, Emirates GBR was on the podium as they took home maximum points from a truncated weekend in Saint-Tropez. Fletcher’s crew went 2-4-6 before winning Race 4 ahead of the Germany SailGP Team presented by Deutsche Bank – a victory that grew in significance overnight.
With storms forecast for Day 2, SailGP took the tough decision to cancel sailing and award points based on overnight positions. That meant victory for GBR. An honorable mention, too, for Germany who recorded their best-ever finish in 4th.

Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix, September 20-21, 2025
1st - Germany SailGP Team presented by Deutsche Bank
2nd - BONDS Flying ROOS
3rd - Switzerland
Driven by Erik Heil, Germany had been growing in stature throughout the season and really came of age at the inaugural Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix, clinching their first-ever win in their second season. Just a month prior, the Germans won their first race in Sassnitz.
Light air conditions on Lake Léman made for tricky conditions with crews sailing short-handed throughout the weekend. It was Germany who made the best of it on Sunday, going 1-3 in a reduced schedule to qualify for the final.
For the U.S. SailGP team, three P4s signaled progress and a best points haul (21) since March’s Los Angeles Sail Grand Prix.
Hosts Switzerland made the most of fierce local support, going 5-2-8-7-2-3 to reach their second Final of the season and second in the last four events. Germany fell off the foils after rounding M1 but got up and foiling when it mattered, holding off Australia to make history in Geneva.
Dylan Fletcher of Emirates GBR salutes his team's victory at the DP World Spain Sail Grand Prix
DP World Spain Sail Grand Prix, October 4-5, 2025
1st - Emirates GBR
2nd - New Zealand
3rd - Germany
Advantage Emirates GBR ahead of the Grand Final? Perhaps. The British have never won SailGP but go into the final event top of the Rolex SailGP Championship standings following a third event win of the season after going 1-5-5-2-5-4-6.
By picking up 29 points with finishes of 3-12-11-6-8-5-4, the U.S. SailGP Team built on solid foundations laid in Switzerland last time out.
The weekend belonged to Fletcher’s crew who laid down a marker to Championship rivals New Zealand, Australia and Spain ahead of what will be a four-way fight to reach the Grand Final at the end of November.
Despite making a slow start in the Final, Emirates GBR elected to take the left turn at Gate 1 before sailing downwind. Trading blows with the Black Foils, Fletcher and GBR triumphed with a calculated gamble to move inside on the final turn, setting them up for Abu Dhabi.
