Light Air, high precision: Three data takeaways from Geneva 2026

Take a closer look at the data behind the Switzerland Sail Grand Prix

The Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix brought whisper-light conditions to Lac Léman, ensuring challenging conditions in Geneva. 
With true wind speeds rarely exceeding 9 mph across the weekend, tactical discipline, start-line execution, and poise under pressure were rewarded. Los Gallos claimed its third event win in five, strengthening its grasp on P2 in the Rolex SailGP Championship with two events to go.
Here’s everything you need to know about where the Grand Prix was won and lost, according to the data…
1. Spain’s tactical masterclass: When flying less pays off
Diego Botín’s Los Gallos delivered a masterclass in efficiency to capture the win, proving that maximizing flight time is not always the fastest path to victory. Across the weekend, Spain averaged just 22.8% foiling time across their six races – the fourth lowest mark in the fleet.
Nowhere was this discipline more decisive than in Sunday's four-boat Final. While Explora Journeys Swiss (83.1%), the BONDS Flying Roos (81.8%), and ROCKWOOL Racing (79.0%) pushed hard to remain airborne, Spain spent only 60.8% of the race on foils. 
Instead, the Spanish nailed the start - crossing the line just 0.7 seconds after the gun at 13.0 mph - and sailed the cleanest, most direct course (3,859 meters). Averaging 21.1 mph with a peak speed of 31.5 mph, Spain completed the race in 6 minutes and 51 seconds, 15 seconds quicker than the Aussies.

2. Swiss foiling magic secures home Final
Sébastien Schneiter gave the passionate home crowd plenty to celebrate, steering Switzerland into a sensational Final appearance on Lac Léman. The Swiss F50 unlocked exceptional light-air performance, posting the fleet’s highest overall foiling mark at 44.5% across six races.
Switzerland delighted local fans with two dominant fleet race victories in Group B, recording an event-high Swiss speed of 33.7 mph. In the Final, Switzerland recorded an event-best 83.1% flight time.
Although hunting for wind on the perimeter pushed their total distance sailed to 4,356 meters, their speed and flight in sub-10 mph breezes marked a breakthrough weekend for the home team.
3. ROCKWOOL’s three-bullet masterclass powers podium finish
Nicolai Sehested and the ROCKWOOL Racing Team were the standout fleet racers in Geneva, dominating Group A by claiming three victories from five qualifying contests.
The Danes showed remarkable adaptability across varying conditions. In the ultra-light 6.1 mph winds of Race A2, Denmark ground out a displacement victory with just 4.8% flight time, averaging 8.3 mph. 
When the breeze pulsed to 7.5 mph in Race A4, they took off, flying for 63.1% of the race and clocking 30.0 mph to take the win. They sealed the group with another bullet in Race A5. 
Underpinning Denmark’s hat-trick was razor-sharp starting: in their three race wins, their time to cross the start line was 1.1s, 1.6s, and 1.3s. That precision earned them the top overall seed (17 points) entering the Final, where they secured a well-deserved 3rd-place podium finish.
