Why Boundaries Matter In SailGP

New to SailGP? Find out why boundaries matter and how teams navigate them…
Published 05/2/2026
SailGP is fast, frenetic and thrilling – and it owes a lot to the tightly packed racecourses that are defined by their boundaries.
On the face of it, boundaries might seem like an afterthought. But they play a much bigger role than simply keeping boats within a set area. They shape tactics, influence decision-making, and introduce a constant balance between risk and reward.
What Are Boundaries?
In SailGP, the racecourse is marked by virtual and physical limits that boats cannot cross without penalty.
These boundaries create a contained “racetrack” for the high-speed action, often close to shore and in front of spectators.
While they make the action more visible, they also add complexity for teams navigating at high speed.
Using The Edges For Advantage
The edges of the course can offer opportunities.
Wind is not always evenly distributed across the course, and boundaries often sit near areas where conditions change. For example, wind may be stronger closer to one side due to geographic features or airflow patterns.
Teams will push toward these edges to access better pressure or a more favorable angle, even though it increases the level of difficulty.
Boundaries don’t just affect individual teams - they influence how the entire 13-strong fleet interacts.
If multiple boats are converging on the same side of the course, space becomes limited. Teams may be forced into tighter maneuvers or less optimal lines to avoid penalties or collisions.
This creates pressure situations where quick thinking is essential.
The Risk Of Getting It Wrong
Pushing the boundary comes with consequences.
Crossing it results in an immediate penalty, forcing the offending boat to go behind other members of the fleet. In short SailGP races - limited to 16 minutes - even a small penalty can mean losing several positions.
There’s also less room to maneuver near the edges. A mistimed turn or unexpected shift in wind can leave a team with no escape route.

Balancing Risk And Reward
Every approach to a boundary is a decision. Stay too central, and a team might miss stronger wind or better angles. Push too hard, and they risk being penalized or trapped. The best teams constantly evaluate this balance, adjusting their strategy as conditions change.
Boundaries are not just limits - they are tactical tools. Understanding boundaries adds a new layer to watching SailGP.
What might look like a simple turn or positioning choice is often influenced by how close a team is willing to sail to the edge. These decisions happen throughout the race and can define the final result.
