WATCH: Jeremy Helps Launch Climate Action Academy

U.S. SailGP Team wing trimmer Jeremy Wilmot helped kick off the first of six Climate Action Academy sessions in conjunction with Sustained Futures…
Wing trimmer Jeremy Wilmot was a guest speaker as the U.S. SailGP Team Climate Action Academy in conjunction with Sustained Futures kicked off on Wednesday.
Speaking to an audience of more than 70 attendees from 15 countries across the globe, Jeremy’s message was simple: We should all feel empowered to do whatever we can to help protect our oceans, starting now.
“A lot of people think they can’t make an impact. That’s the big challenge – changing that mindset,” said Jeremy.
“We sometimes go to venues where the water is really dirty. We could just complain about it, but instead, we choose to educate and try to leave an impact. The goal is to help locals or fans feel empowered to do something – anything.
“And really, just don’t be afraid to start. Don’t be afraid to take that first step and educate the people around you. Be that person. And when you get tired, you’ll have groups like this one to lean on for support.”
The Climate Action Academy is an educational initiative designed to empower young people with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration to become leaders in ocean and climate advocacy.
Through six dynamic sessions led by athletes, scientists, indigenous leaders, engineers, and sustainability innovators, Climate Action Academy invites youth to explore ocean health, climate change, and cutting-edge technology.

Jeremy and the rest of the U.S. SailGP Team take their responsibility to lead by example seriously. The team is working toward zero plastic waste at SailGP events – a goal we’re close to achieving.
“For us, it’s important to use our platform to drive positive change,” Jeremy explained. “And this issue – climate and ocean health – hits home. We’re seeing changes in weather patterns and more debris in the ocean. It’s gotten to a point where sailors can’t just stand still anymore. We have to act.
“My first passion was ocean racing and, if you follow it, you’ve probably heard more and more stories of hitting debris. There’s a lot of plastic out there – just pollution in general. As a kid, I never thought I'd have to deal with this. There’s a selfish part of it, sure – I love this beautiful sport, and it’s getting damaged by something so messy.
“I’ve personally seen changes in plastic use and debris over my lifetime. So if we can do anything to slow that down, stop it, or improve it for future generations, I’m 100% all in. And I know the team is, too.”
