A California native, Hans Henken began competing at six years old in the Naples Sabot and has since built a career defined by sustained excellence at the highest levels of international competition. He is an Olympic bronze medalist with the U.S. Olympic Team at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, a Pan American Games gold medalist at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, and was recognized as the 2024 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, one of the sport’s most prestigious individual honors. At his Olympic debut, Hans won the first medal for Team USA in sailing since Rio 2016 and the first medal in the 49er class since Sydney 2000.
Hans first emerged on the world stage in 2008 with a bronze medal at the Youth World Championships and quickly ascended through the international ranks. In 2009, he claimed the Under-23 International Moth World Championship, establishing himself as one of the most technically proficient and innovative foiling sailors of his generation. He is a five-time National Champion, four-time North American Champion, a three-time SailGP podium finisher, and a SailGP event winner as Flight Controller at the Range Rover France Sail Grand Prix | Saint-Tropez in 2022.
From 2011 to 2018, Hans attended Stanford University, where he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. During that time, he competed for the Stanford Varsity Sailing Team and served as Team Captain from 2013–2014, leading the Cardinal through its most successful season. In 2015, he was named an All-Academic All-American and honored as Stanford University’s Male Athlete of the Year. His career is marked by a rare ability to pair elite athletic execution with a deep understanding of engineering principles.
Outside of competition, Hans enjoys skiing and surfing. He is especially interested in the crossover between high-performance athletics, engineering, and his future as a rocket scientist, combining his passions for sport, technology, and innovation.
